EN 1090 & EN ISO 3834 Consultancy

Structural Safety as a Foundation for a Sustainable Future

Sustainability is not only about climate impact, materials, and energy efficiency – it is also about safe, durable, and compliant structures that stand the test of time. Compliance with EN 1090 and EN ISO 3834 ensures that steel and aluminium structures placed on the EU market are manufactured, controlled, and documented according to harmonised European requirements. This is a fundamental part of responsible construction and long-term sustainability.

Our consultancy bridges regulatory compliance, technical quality, and sustainability thinking, supporting companies from implementation to successful certification.

EN 1090 – CE Marking of Structural Components

What is EN 1090?

EN 1090 is a harmonised European standard regulating the manufacture of load-bearing steel and aluminium structures. Compliance with EN 1090 allows manufacturers to CE mark their structural components and legally place them on the EU market.

EN 1090 has been mandatory since 1 July 2014 for all construction products covered by the standard and used in permanent works.

Why EN 1090 Matters for Sustainability

Compliance with EN 1090 contributes directly to a more sustainable built environment by:

  • Ensuring structural safety and reliability, reducing the risk of failures, repairs, and premature replacements

  • Supporting resource efficiency through controlled fabrication processes

  • Increasing traceability and accountability across the supply chain

  • Aligning with EU-level regulations that promote safe, durable, and high-quality buildings

Safe buildings are sustainable buildings – longevity and compliance are key pillars of responsible construction.

What EN 1090 Covers

EN 1090 focuses on:

  • Factory Production Control (FPC)

  • Execution classes (EXC1–EXC4)

  • Welding coordination and competence

  • Material traceability and documentation

  • Inspection, testing, and quality control

  • CE marking and Declaration of Performance (DoP)

EN ISO 3834 – Quality Requirements for Welding

The Link Between EN 1090 and EN ISO 3834

EN ISO 3834 defines the quality requirements for welding, which is a critical special process within EN 1090. A robust ISO 3834 system is often essential to demonstrate compliance with EN 1090, particularly for higher execution classes.

ISO 3834 ensures that welding is:

  • Properly planned and controlled

  • Performed by qualified personnel

  • Documented and verifiable

Together, EN 1090 and EN ISO 3834 form a strong framework for quality, safety, and compliance in structural manufacturing.
